Hotel de Mar on its Illetas promontory — the chocolate building above two coves

Hotel de Mar, Gran Meliá

Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá sits on its own promontory in Illetas, on Mallorca's southwest coast, roughly twenty minutes from Palma. Built in 1964 to a design by Catalan architect José Antonio Coderch, its stepped brown facade earned it a local nickname, "the chocolate building," and protected status that has kept the exterior untouched for six decades. The hotel is adults-only, admitting guests aged fifteen and over, and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. Across 137 rooms and suites, in ten categories from Deluxe Room to Master Suite, every accommodation faces the sea. Four dining venues cover the day: Arrels by chef Marga Coll for Mallorcan cooking, Bombón Pool Club by Alberta Ferretti for Mediterranean plates at the pool, entre Mar for breakfast, and Riva Lounge, the newest addition, built around the language of Riva's yachts. A Spa by Clarins & myBlend, with a water circuit, occupies the lower floors.

Riva Lounge opened in May 2025, joining the yacht house's own circle of Riva Destinations alongside Venice and Monte Carlo. The room is fitted in mahogany, ribbed maple and polished steel, with Aquariva lamps and Aquarama seating carried over from the boats themselves, and opens onto a terrace above the Mediterranean for all-day dining and sunset sittings. Inside it, the Riva Privée seats up to six for wine and cheese tastings, and a Rivamare motor launch is available to charter from the hotel's own mooring.
