InterContinental Hayman Island
Hayman sits at the top of the Whitsunday archipelago, closer to the outer Great Barrier Reef than any other Whitsunday resort island. There is no runway: guests arrive by boat from Hamilton Island, a 55-minute crossing, or by helicopter or seaplane in fifteen minutes. The approach is part of the arrival.
Four wings, Pool, Lagoon, Beach and Pavilion, step down through rainforest and lawn toward the water, with four residences set on the hilltop above. The island has taken guests since 1950, through a $300 million rebuild in the 1980s and a $135 million redesign completed in 2019 that brought the InterContinental name.
Hayman Pool, a saltwater pool built on hemisphere scale, anchors the Pool Wing; a separate infinity pool looks straight out to the Coral Sea from the Lagoon Wing. Five restaurants and bars, Pacific, Amici, Bam Bam, Aqua and Bar Fifty, cover the range from fine dining to poolside share plates, and Hayman Spa runs treatments built on ingredients drawn from the surrounding reef.
